kamala dancing!

As I said before :
I knew that Kamala is a great dancer but seeing that video makes me want to see more!!!
She will be dancing the 6th & 7th of March
at Southbank Centre, Queen Elizabeth Hall, London!

Plus, she will be teaching in a workshop for the company.

Technique and Repertory (advanced/professional level)
generated from contemporary dance and the Indian classical dance form Bharata Natyam. Shobana Jeyasingh has created a uniquely contemporary language: the work is also informed by the diverse movement cultures that her dancers bring into the studio (Capoeira and Kalari, among others). SJDC's Company Workshops provide an exciting opportunity for advanced and professional level dancers to experience SJDC training techniques and learn the new repertoire Faultline.
Company dancers Saju Hari and Kamala Devam will lead the workshops.

First day today....

of the contemporary dance festival of Marrakech...
We started by...walking all together : hip hop dancers and contemporary dancers...Of course it was not ordinary walking. It was a dancer's walk : for some it was an act of embodiment, for some a political statement, for others an urgency to exist, for others..and others...As I said before : human posture is not a right. It is a privilege generated by consciousness...
May the dance be with us!

Whose Christmas?

Each year I have to define my posture towards Christmas & new Year's eve...As I said on a radio interview a few days ago, one of the most powerful ways to resist to dominant culture is to DANCE!
- Dance???
- yes, dance!
The example I gave is that dominant culture does not consider "taking time" as a human priority...
Dance is all about taking Time & experiencing Space in non conventional ways that can be as extreme as...immobility!
TAKING TIME TODAY IS CRUCIAL.
BEING SENSITIVE TO SPACE TODAY IS URGENT.

I can only applaud such initiatives! I did a street performance in the first half hour of 2006 as "Father Christmas" with an african mask, but very few saw it. Let's go to the malls to slow down! Let's inspire our children instead of spoiling them... James Hillman thinks that "depression" is natural when the world is in a state like the present one. Depression SLOWS ONE DOWN! Slowness forces us to see the essentials and redefine the poetics of this world!
Let's enjoy our Sadness and Slow Down : the world will be thankful...

How do I communicate the local utopias from now on?
Dancing like a madman in front of agitated students, expressing the incapacity to act towards a direction, implosing violently through an embodiment of urgency / scream?
What Zorro did, cannot continue...
I need to work towards a dance that inspires to transformation : breathe mindfully, act decisively but sensibly, slow down to listen to a planetary pulse, look to your neighbour with empathy, turn mistrust inside out, intrigue the camels to observe your movement, ride you bike to work, hit for the essentials, dress no-logo, dive into your solar plexus before you say no or yes...
May the space be with you!
